VOLUNTEERS NEEDED !
SATURDAY APRIL 20
HELP CLEAN UP DC’S NORTH STONE
Calling all DCALS members and Washington area land surveyors! Please donate a little time and labor. Come to DC’s NORTH POINT BOUNDARY STONE on SATURDAY APRIL 20 from 10 am to 4 pm. Hard-working volunteers are sought for ‘North Stone Clean-up Day.’
As you may know, two years ago DCALS bought the ‘north tip’ of Washington DC, marked by Andrew Ellicott’s 1792 North Point boundary stone. We own a small piece of woods containing the stone.
Unfortunately, the site hasn’t been cleared for years. It’s an overgrown tangle of fallen tree limbs, stickers, vines, poison ivy, trash and debris. Neighboring properties on three sides are beautifully maintained. Our little parcel should look as nice as theirs.
A single day of volunteer work by Washington’s land surveyors will transform the place. Please come out and help ― Saturday April 20, from 10 am to 4 pm. The more volunteers we have the better. There’s plenty of work for everybody.
WHERE TO PARK
Our North Stone property is landlocked. Vehicles can get close, but a short hike through Rock Creek Park is required. Nearest free parking is on East Beach Drive by Verbena and Tamarack Streets NW. (SEE MAP.) Take 16th Street NW to its circle at the DC Line. Exit that circle on North Portal Drive. Turn right on East Beach Drive and follow that to its north end at Verbena Street. Park along the woods, as close to Verbena as possible. There’s no trail to the stone. (We’ll make one.) To find us from North Portal Drive, enter the woods, go down the slope and turn right.
WHAT TO BRING
Every kind of yard and garden tool will be needed for this job. Please bring whatever you can of the following items. Write your name on your tools.
Shovels, picks, hoes, rakes, digging bars, pry bars, tree saws, branch pruners, pole-saws, axes, machetes, leaf bags, wheelbarrows with big tires for rough ground, maybe one chainsaw.
Please wear work gloves, work boots, long-sleeve shirts, long pants and other rugged clothing. Eye protection and kneepads might be helpful. If desired, bring water and food for yourself. We should have a first-aid kit handy, just in case.
We’ll have a large quantity of branches and debris to remove. If you own a pickup truck or trailer, and have a place to dispose of cuttings, please bring your vehicle and haul a load for us.
Everyone is urged to participate. Help clean up Andrew Ellicott’s North Stone! We hope to see you there on Saturday April 20.
And many thanks as always for supporting DCALS.
