Over the next few years, enhancements and additions to the network of global navigation satellites — including NAVSTAR, GLONASS, GALILEO and China’s BeiDou — will significantly improve GPS for surveying and other applications. To meet expected greater demand, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is implementing a plan to modernize its National Spatial Reference System. This will use an entirely new geodetic reference frame — with updated geometric (horizontal) and gravimetric (vertical) realizations — that will replace the old North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88.)  ‘NATRF 2022’ will be designed so the geometric component (latitude, longitude, ellipsoid height) will be virtually identical to, and aligned with, the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) — while orthometric heights will be based exclusively on a nationwide high-accuracy gravimetric geoid model. Our speaker, a world expert, will explain the National Spatial Reference System, highlight all the important new changes, and outline how NGS is improving both its capacity and access.

Well known DCALS charter member DAVE DOYLE began his geodetic surveying career in 1967. He joined NGS in ’72, becoming its Chief Geodetic Surveyor by 2001. After retiring he formed Base 9 Geodetic Consulting Services, providing expertise and training in geodesy to both the public and private sectors. Dave is past-president of AAGS, an active member of the DC, Maryland and Virginia professional associations, and author of more than 30 technical papers on geodesy. He was Maryland’s Surveyor of the Year in 2008. The media’s ‘go-to’ expert for all questions on geodesy, Dave’s probably made more TV appearances than all other surveyors combined.

This talk covers imminent cutting-edge advances in US survey datums. DCALS will award certificates for 1 CPC equivalent to 1 PDH or 1 CE-Unit Credit Hour — to every licensed attendee.
