It’s DCALS’ EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY! Come join the celebration on Wednesday Sept. 11 at our annual Inauguration of Officers Gala Banquet. Since 2001 DCALS has been helping land surveyors in Washington DC. Fred Deegbe will pass the gavel to new president Awel Ahmed. Spouses and guests are welcome. Everyone is urged to attend.

Main Presentation . . .UNBUILT WASHINGTON – Remarkable Projects Proposed for DC, but Never Built. This outstanding talk, originally given at the Smithsonian, examines dozens of amazing projects once proposed in Washington DC, which for various reasons were never built. Some were inspired ideas. It’s a loss not to have them. Others ranged from slightly bizarre, to just plain nuts. Make the National Mall an aircraft landing strip? How about putting railroad tunnels under it? Here’s an idea – a monstrous gothic skyscraper. Or colossal ‘Arc de Triomphes’ spanning the entrys to Washington? Imagine yourself as a DC planning commissioner. What would you approve? The city’s unbuilt projects hold as many lessons for us today as those that stand. This talk richly earns 1- CPC Credit and meets all of DC’s new continuing-education requirements. Please join us.

DON ALEXANDER HAWKINS is a native Washington architect who earned a master’s degree in Urban Design at age 40. His focus has always been on how the early capital was designed. He’s made enormous contributions to the popular understanding by graphic means, mostly maps. An authority on the L’Enfant Plan, the landscape in which it was set and the relationship between the two, Don’s chaired the Committee of 100 for the Federal City, the Parks and History Association, and served on the Historical Society of Washington’s Editorial Board since its creation in 1989. His interest in DC’s unbuilt projects began over 30 years ago, when he teamed with Donald Beekman Myer of Fine Arts Commission on an AIA exhibit at National Building Museum featuring them.
