MEETING PROGRAM :
It’s DCALS’ SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY! Come join the celebration on September 5 at our annual Inauguration of Officers Gala Dinner. Matt Hull will pass the honored gavel to 2019 president Fred Deegbe. Spouses and guests are welcome and urged to attend. Our main presentation will interest everyone . . .
Main Presentation. . . The LAW - Lessons Learned from Life, Law and Land Surveying. The moment Jim Demma started work on his first day as a rookie field surveyor in 1959, he began accumulating valuable lessons he never forgot. Like all of us who strive to unravel the mysteries of our profession, he discovered how closely law and surveying connect. It led him to become a lawyer. His talk will focus primarily on ‘The Law’ – as it has intertwined with land surveying throughout his nearly 60-year career – but will also feature insights he’s gained about human nature, the art of persuasion, peace orders, baseball, ‘making mountains out of molehills,’ marriage, divorce and other wisdom. This is the talk Jim Demma has always wanted to give DCALS. CPC Credits will be awarded. Please join us.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER :
A rare native Washingtonian, Jim Demma grew up in Georgetown and Adams Morgan. His father was the Redskins’ annual Santa Claus at final home games. To this day Jim still fondly recalls DC from his boyhood as the “greatest place ever to live” – a sentiment shared by all residents of that time. After high school he began working summers at a survey firm in Wheaton, starting as an entry-level chainman and advancing to become a licensed professional land surveyor. He earned a degree from the University of Maryland then attended law school at night, passing the bar in ‘72. Soon thereafter – uniquely qualified - he began teaching ‘Maryland Boundary Law’ for MSS. Today, six decades (and six books) later, he’s universally acknowledged as one of our profession’s top boundary law experts. Jim still practices law every day, and still teaches land surveyors. Plus, now he’s teaching DC law for DCALS.
