‘LONG-LOST BREWERIES OF OLD DC’ — Washington once rivaled Milwaukee and St. Louis as a beer-brewing capital. For more than 100 years major brewing operations flourished throughout DC. And along with the city’s larger breweries, many neighborhood taverns also ‘brewed their own.’ Plus there were ‘beer gardens’ where whole families were served! It all added up to a once substantial industry – almost entirely killed by Prohibition in 1917. Our guest speaker, author Garrett Peck, researched old records and pinpointed the forgotten brewery locations - near Dupont Circle, Navy Yard, Kennedy Center and all across DC. He published a remarkable book about them in 2014, ‘Capital Beer’ - which will be available on June 14, when its author takes us on a ‘heady’ tour through Washington and its storied brewing past.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:
Garrett Peck, author of six books about our region’s history, is (among other interests) an official Smithsonian tour guide who’s been featured on C-Span’s ‘Book TV’ as well as the History Channel. He’s spoken at Library of Congress, National Archives, Smithsonian Institution and to numerous local groups. Three of his favorite topics are beer, bootlegging and Prohibition in DC. A genuine ‘beer expert’ who understands the differences between ale, lager, pilsner, stout, porter and all the rest, Mr. Peck is a VMI and GWU graduate who today resides in northern Virginia.
