MEETING PROGRAM:

Everyone knows WMATA is performing significant upgrades to all its systems. These improvements couldn’t be engineered or built without high-accuracy surveys of the existing infrastructure – down to the level of tracing individual communication cables along tunnel walls. Conventionally, such a job would take years to survey and cost millions. Metro and its consultants developed a high-tech way to accomplish this function.
How? Mobile LiDAR Acquisition Technology - accurate enough to generate tight 3D geometry models of the entire 104-mile project. But – mobile LiDAR mapping needs positioning information and is usually reliant on GPS. How do you maintain accuracy in subterranean tunnels where GPS won’t penetrate and design clearances are critical? Plus don’t forget - Metrorail was built in five different decades across seven jurisdictions using six different datums - all of which must be reconciled.
To learn the extraordinary solution employed by WMATA and its consultant team – a first for any system the size and complexity of Washington’s Metro – please join us on Wednesday March 8.

An Outcome Measure will be conducted and Certificates of Professional Education will be awarded for 1-PDH . . . equivalent to 1-Maryland ‘A’ Credit or 1-Virginia CE-Unit Credit Hour.
