MEETING PROGRAM :
Please join us December 14 for DCALS’ 16th Annual Holiday Gala Banquet. This will be another enjoyable informative evening. Everyone is invited and urged to attend.
“STREETCARS OF OUR NATION’S CAPITAL” — Many DCALS members can happily recall riding old D.C. Transit’s bell-ringing, pale-green streetcars in their childhood — swaying across high trestles out to Glen Echo with windows wide open in the summertime. Experts still consider those streetcars “the best transportation system Washington ever had.” They were an indispensable part of everyday life in DC for 100-years. From rudimentary horse-cars of the Civil War, they advanced to underground cables like San Francisco, then quickly adopted the new marvel of electricity. They opened up DC’s remote ‘suburbs’ like Tenleytown and Chevy Chase. In many cases, the developers who built those subdivisions owned the streetcar lines out to them. This presentation puts faces to names that we land surveyors still see on old plats all the time . . . George Truesdell (Eckington,) Francis Newlands (Chevy Chase,) Henry Griswold (Anacostia) and others. The story of Washington DC’s development from 1862 to 1962 is told through its streetcars. Please join us.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER :
Native Washingtonian John DeFerrari is the author of three delightful books on local DC history. A graduate of Catholic University, with a master’s from Harvard, his ‘day job’ is analyst for the US Federal government, but his free time is devoted to digging up little-known facts about the history of our nation’s capital. He pens the popular Streets of Washington blog and also serves as trustee for the DC Preservation League, working actively to preserve Washington’s historic built environment. A lifelong passion for DC history led him to publish ‘Lost Washington DC’ in 2011, followed by ‘Capital Eats’ (about memorable restaurants) in 2013, and most recently, ‘Capital Streetcars: Early Mass Transit in Washington DC’ - which will be available for purchase at our dinner.
